Museum of knitters in Sirogojno
In the Zlatibor region, women have always worked their own wool from fleece to tow and kanura, spun, wove and knitted blankets and clothes for their neighbors, warm woolen socks, gloves, scarves, and then came sweaters. Their craft is as old as the world.
Women from Sirogojn and the surrounding area showed their handicrafts publicly for the first time at an exhibition in 1962. The bravest decided to organize and knit for the market and after three decades almost 2,000 knitters worked for the world fashion market.
About 35,000 unique items of clothing, knitted with soft Icelandic wool, went to the world, and the foreign exchange inflow reached millions of dollars a year. From traditional occupations, high-quality fashion clothing, with distinctive design and authentic style, has been created. Sweaters, jackets, coats, coats, sets, hats and scarves from Sirogojn were seen at fashion shows, fairs and in the windows of exclusive stores in Sweden, Italy, France, Germany, America, Japan...
The world's fashion magazines wrote about them, mentioning Zlatibor knitters, unknown veiled women, staring at the hands that move rows, patterns, colors with unfathomable speed...
In their honor, but also to preserve the unforgettable beauty and unrepeatable originality of their works for the times to come, the Museum of Knitters was founded as a permanent tribute to their perseverance, work and skill that introduced Sirogojno to the world and brought the world to Sirogojno.
Testimonials, texts from fashion magazines and shows, as well as numerous awards are kept in the Museum, which confirm the importance of the Zlatibor knitters and testify to their fame around the world. Letters and photos of famous people who had at least one item of clothing from the collection of Zlatibor knitters, such as Jovanka Broz, Barbara Bush, Nancy Reagan and others, are kept. The famous actress Liv Ullmann was a regular buyer of their clothes on Fifth Avenue, and the famous French designer Pierre Cardin selected 18 pieces of knitters from Sirogoyin for his collection.
You can visit the Museum of Knitters in Sirogojno from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the winter, and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the summer.
